Jeff Bezos was born Jan. 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He joined a New York investment bank in 1990. Soon named senior vice president he was in charge of examining the investment possibilities of the Internet. In 1994 he quit his job and opened a virtual bookstore. Amazon.com sold its first book in 1995. It has since become the largest retailer on the Web and the model for Internet sales.
